The buck will not need to be replaced as often as the does and should be used as a breeder for at least three years. You should, as a rule, change out the buck every three years or sooner, if necessary. If you realize the entire colony kindle size is small or becoming smaller, it is the bucks fault and he should be replaced immediately. As with the does, a buck replacement should already be grown and ready to start breeding when he is placed in the colony.
A single buck in a colony breeding room will not have typical territorial problems since he is the only mature male. He will oversee and protect his does from other mature bucks, but will not bother his babies. He will breed his does usually without anyone ever seeing him. It is a very quick breeding lasting no more than a few seconds.
